Twitter features you might not know about

Social media channels are always changing. It’s easy for updates to slip through the cracks with busy schedules. Here are a few more recent Twitter updates that you may have missed.

Likes instead of favourites

Twitter has replaced its “favourite” function with a “like” button. Their goal is to make their service more user friendly.

What does this mean for your Twitter marketing? Well, a “like” has a different use than a favourite. While I used to be rather reserved with the favourite button, I will be using the like button more. To acknowledge comments and show agreement with tweets for example. Note that the like button symbol is a heart in the Twitter interface.

If any of you followed my Twitter testimonials advice, if you up the use of the like button, this is no longer as useful as it once was. You’ll have to rethink this strategy.

Twitter polls

Remember Facebook polls you could ask on your page? Twitter has a feature that allows you to do a similar thing. Just click on “poll” when you go to compose your message. Great way to do a little market research or encourage some interaction with your audience.

Comment on a retweet

Launched in April of this year, it is possible to add your own comment to a retweet. Why is this useful? It allows you to share your view without breaking the tweet character limit. The example below shows it in action…

Martina: I like the comment feature on retweets. It often gives a good overview of the thread. I still have the old version of Twitter on my smartphone, so I stick to the golden star (favorite)! 😉 The heart / like is a bit different. Why couldn’t they have both a star (favorite) and a heart (like)? The fav. symbol could act as a bookmark for future reference.

I haven’t tested the poll feature yet. Do you have any good business cases with this feature?

Thanks for sharing your 2 cents Martin! I also was thinking that having both a favourite and a like would have been good and I agree that they are different. I liked using the favourite functionality to organize positive tweets to act as mini testimonials of sorts. I haven’t tried out polls yet myself either but I have it on my to-do list. Am curious how much interaction they get. Thanks for checking out the post!
